Bret Stephens writes a great opinion piece in today’s New York Times. It’s called “Why We Admire Zelensky.” I hope you have access to the Times website. If so, leave me now and go read it. It’s really, really good.
Stephens ticks off a list of reasons we admire Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Among them…. Courage. Also, who and what he faces.
Bret Stephens compares Volodymyr Zelensky to Vladimir Putin too. He says Putin represents neither a nation or a cause.
Here’s something else Stephens says… Zelensky “rouses the better angels of our nature.” Don’t you love that?
He goes on to say that Zelensky has made Joe Biden a better president. Germany a better country. NATO a better alliance.
President Zelensky has inspired his country. They need all the inspiration they can get too. This war rages on. And the news today is not good.
Russia has told Ukraine they have until today to surrender the city of Mariupol. The resistance vows to keep fighting.
The commander of the group released a video pleading for help. He says they are outnumbered 10-to-1. They are hiding in tunnels protecting women and children.
Officials say Russia has agreed to a temporary cease fire to allow civilians to safely leave. Let’s hope they stick to it.
The battle for Donbas is underway too. Russia is focusing its troops there. It’s closer to the Russian border allowing Moscow to move military supplies across shorter distances.
On every level, this is horrible. It just seems to get worse. As we watch, a country is being destroyed. A society wiped out.
Ukraine is not going to give up. They will fight until the end. They have been inspired by Volodymyr Zelensky. You know what? We’ve all been inspired Volodymyr Zelensky.
Brett Stephens writes “Why We Admire Zelensky.” He then says, “The question almost answers itself.”
