A couple of stories are getting my attention this morning. While the fallout from the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade continues to make headlines, there is other news.
This story out of San Antonio is so upsetting. Nearly four dozen migrants found dead in the back of a semi truck.
The 18-wheeler had been abandoned near a railroad track. 46 people dead. San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg says, “We are dealing with a horrific human tragedy.”
Sixteen people were rescued. Fox News reports they are suffering from heatstroke and heat exhaustion. No water for them. No air conditioning in that semi either. Officials say it could have been over 150 degrees. Horrible.
Three people have been arrested. It’s believed they were human smugglers. Former Homeland Security official, Ari Jimenez, says, “These individuals have no care. None at all for human life. So, they are putting them in the back of these tractor trailers. They don’t know where they are, where they’re going.”
A little breaking news. The G-7 summit just ended in Germany. Here’s what the Washington Post is reporting: Leaders from the Group of Seven wealthiest democracies said they would urgently explore price caps on Russian oil and gas “to prevent Russia from profiting from its war of aggression.” However, they did not impose any new energy sanctions, as the summit concluded in Germany.
The other story I’m watching involves the war in Ukraine. A Russian missile hit a shopping mall in the central part of the country yesterday. It was packed with people. President Zelensky estimates more than a thousand people were inside.
Sixteen people are known dead. Dozens more hurt. They are still looking for survivors in the rubble. Zelensky calls it one of the most daring terrorist attacks in European history.
This war just drags on. According to CNN, President Zelensky told the G-7 that he wants the war to be over by the end of 2022.
That seems like a long way off. The end of the year. Then again, I’ll be surprised if it really is done by then. And… how might it end?
It’s all so sad. Our only hope is Jesus!
