Following the Opening Ceremony (or is it Ceremonies?) for the Olympic Games on Friday, I spent the weekend watching the Games. (Games. I’m so old school.)

Here’s the thing I’m starting to figure out. NBC is running them twice. The “live” portion earlier in the day and the pre-recorded part in prime time. I really don’t need to watch both. The results don’t change.

Simone Biles is amazing at 11am and the same at 7pm. Leon Marchand is the next Michael Phelps at noon and at 8pm.

All that said, I cannot get enough of this. I’m not sure I have ever watched the Olympics more than I am right now.

Why? Because everything else in the world is an effing mess. I need a break from the Middle East. The war in Ukraine. American politics. The price of a rotisserie chicken at the grocery store.

Hell, even the Opening Ceremony (Ceremonies) has become controversial. And I’m not talking about Kelly Clarkson.

Look, it’s French. They push the envelope. Maybe it was The Last Supper. Maybe not.

I’m more concerned about my sleep. My phone tells me how Simone Biles is doing. I watch it in real time. (If anything is really real anymore.) I watch it again in prime time. Ugh.

If not this, what? Turner Classic Movies? I got a bad crush on Ben Mankiewicz. When he talks about Eva Marie Saint, I get all gooey inside.

There’s Hallmark. I know how they all end. It’s the same plot. I’m not criticizing. I like happy endings.

Speaking of…. “Deadpool and Wolverine” made a ton of money this weekend. Like $438 million. “R” rated. The most ever for an “R” rated picture. Good for them.

I’ll see it. After the Olympics. After I watch the Olympics repeat.

I gotta turn this off. It’s late. I gotta get up early. Somebody’s got to read the news in the morning.

  1. I love you Russell. Always have. You always say what I’m thinking. I normally don’t watch sports, but turned it on last night and watched until 10:00 news. I’m 82, had to retire from my job the end of May because I have a broken neck (brain stem). So I’ve seen a lot, but nothing like now. Enjoyed the “games” last night. (Old school).
