Thanks for the memories.

An amazing career.

I came to San Antonio to celebrate the career of an incredible journalist, Deborah Knapp.

She was a mentor to me and more importantly, a dear friend. Deborah Knapp. A nearly fifty year career in TV news. Most of that in San Antonio, Texas. From 1985 until 1992, I had the pleasure of working with her.

Any success I have had in this business, I owe largely to Deborah Knapp. Not just for her journalism expertise, but for her humanity. Her genuine caring about people and her community.

Here’s the thing. Deborah left San Antonio. Went to Philadelphia to anchor the news there. Destined for the network.

When the network came calling, she said, “You know, I think I want to go back to my hometown and raise my family.” That’s what she did. San Antonio is better for it.

So am I.

My years in San Antonio were some of the happiest in my career.

Full stop. I love Tampa Bay. Thirty years. It’s home.

That said, time and place. San Antonio. If you are from anywhere in Texas, San Antonio is your second hometown.

Loved celebrating Deborah’s retirement. Also, loved revisiting my favorite places here.

I might have visited the same restaurant three times. Rosario’s. I might have had the same thing every time. Chicken enchiladas.

Clearly, the Munjaro wore off just in time.

We walked downtown San Antonio last night. I said, “I haven’t seen the Alamo yet.” Deborah said, “I love the Alamo at night.” We walked there.

I loved being here for a few days. Heading back home. Full belly. Full heart to celebrate, dare I say it, an icon.

Love you Deborah. Thanks for the memories.

By the way, it’s hot here! Really, really hot.
